Sweet Hot Soul
We were very honored to be the first to present Miles Bonny live to Chicago since he is a longtime favorite artist of ours. Although his music has been well known and respected around the world for many years, it was about a month before he came to Chicago that his freshman album, ‘Lumberjack Soul’, was recognized by BoomBox as being one of the ‘25 Most Slept-On R&B and Soul Records of the Last Decade’. His second album, ‘Supa Soul Sh*t’, has received high praise and excellent critical review worldwide, which resulted in extensive touring in Europe with label mates, Brenk Sinatra and the Ruffcats. Bonny is best known for bringing a unique sultriness to his soul stories with jazzy horns that he blends seamlessly with neck-snapping and body-moving beats.
That night, Chicago got to witness each act’s refinement as artists and their mastery of skill. We, as an audience, got to experience soul music at its sweetest...and its hottest. To warm up the evening, DJCG flew in from Austin to personally exhibit the style of music he coined ‘Jazztronica’, which is a unique blend of many musical genres with a hip-hop sensibility. Jazztronica has taken him around the world and has earned him chances to play alongside many greats as well as to release a couple of EPs in Europe. DJCG upholds the cultural legacy of legendary DJs that came before him yet remains completely open to pushing the boundaries and experimenting with some of today’s newest music. He was the perfect DJ to open up for the stellar Bonny performance.
Miles thoughtfully weaved grooves and enchanting soul together for his performance. His horn playing, voice and lyrics moved the audience in ways we haven’t seen happen before. Despite being mesmerized, people were still moving to the music. Miles is definitely an act you need to catch live if you can as his potency on stage is a rare thing.
Anthony Valadez is a man of many talents. He is an influential radio show host on LA’s KCRW (and one of the US’ biggest taste-makers), a DJ of great prowess ( the best way to describe his sets are to say that they are akin to a ‘Hulk Smash’), a photographer, a designer and a recording artist. We were so very lucky to have him take a small break and come DJ for Miles as well as turn the concert into an electrified, all-out, non-stop, dance party. This was definitely a world-class event and all thanks to the world-class talent that came to our little city to spread some love and a lot of soul.
