To celebrate our first anniversary, we wanted to showcase music the way we like it: excellent and without boundaries. We invited two DJs that we thought embodied our beliefs through and through: present new music that deserves to be supported by more people and to blow the dust off of some forgotten gems. Our guests were DJ LeFtO and SHRED.
LeFtO is a type of wandering monk, a DJ that comes into your town and leads you to enlightenment through his wildly eclectic sets and then quietly returns into the cloud hidden place from which he came. He is internationally renowned for his DJ sets and, at the time of our party, was recently crowned ‘Best DJ in the World’ by the BBC’s Gilles Peterson. He is regarded as one of Europe’s most important taste-makers and host of his own show on Belgium’s foremost national radio station, Studio Brussel. With such diverse playlists during his radio show and his DJ sets worldwide, it’s no wonder that LeFtO is affiliated with famous record labels such as Brownswood, Blue Note, !K7, Stones Throw and Jazzy Sport.
SHRED is a DJ that we were sure to go see every month at her party, MAXX TRAXX. As a part of San Francisco’s original-on-vinyl-only Sweater Funk Crew, Shred brought a deep knowledge of music to Chicago and with husband, Meaty Ogre (Galapagos4), started a record label called Cherries Records. Between her time in San Francisco and Chicago, she got to host and play alongside artists such as: Waajeed, Natasha Diggs, GE-OLOGY, Onra, Leroy Burgess, Dam-Funk, Peanut Butter Wolf, Kon & Amir, Daz-I-Kue, DJ Spinna, Mayer Hawthorne, Jesse De La Pena, Amalia and Mr. Peabody’s Records. Cherries Records’ releases are selling out around the world and have made best-seller lists in Europe. Shred is known for her deep record collection and technical prowess behind the decks, always ensuring that people are up and dancing.
Together, the two DJs provided Chicago with a musical journey and lots of dancing. Shred kept it soulful with deep boogie and delicious bass heavy selections. LeFtO crushed the room and had the entire place going for the remainder of the night. What made the biggest impression on us was, when the lights came on at the end of the night, people gave LeFtO a round of applause. That is something we have only witnessed in Japan. Chicago is definitely a city of music-heads, so to draw that out proves that LeFtO is rare among DJs and a sonic delight to experience. If you have a chance to see either of these DJs, don’t hesitate!
